They are trying to add requested features back into the design, but are doing it in the most awkward way possible. Case in point: the grades on review articles. And they've fixed the issue since I posted that. It seems they are hustling to fix things.

Ugh, so sad... pre-Kinja that would have been an awesome get and I would have read every comment.

I switched to TI fulltime for commenting over a year ago, so the comment stuff hasn't affected me as strongly as it has many of you.
But the redesign is a dealbreaker. AVC and I are done.
The three problems: 1. It's so goddamn hard to find anything I want to read. A list of articles is only useful if it's a list of super cool articles, but I want to see niche features like Random Roles, Ignatiy's book reviews, and other stuff that just ain't popping up on the homepage.
2. No more comments on those old TV reviews. Going through Breaking Bad and Parks & Rec years after airtime (except the final season of BB, which I did watch live), half my fun was reading all the crazy-long AVC comment threads under the reviews. Really, all the comments. Even though I was a single weirdo in an apartment watching the shows with no pants on, reading everyone's thoughts and favorite quotes and analyses made me feel like I was watching the shows with a bunch of slightly smarter, slightly cooler, slightly wittier people. And it was an integral part of the watch. No bingeing! I have to read the comments between eps!
3. Going back to #1, presenting a list of articles really nakedly and sadly reminds me that almost all the content these days sucks. While I struggle to find last week's Liam Neeson / History of Violence piece, I keep thinking, "Wow, I don't have any interest in reading that, or that, or that, or that, or..." It's depressing. It's depressing seeing a stark illustration of how little they have left.

Why even bother with a commenting system if it's barely functional and you don't care about it? The AVC is dead.

I have no idea if old comments are going to come over, but the good news is that they are still quickly accessible--or at least more quickly accessible then looking for Disqis's archive, which doesn't seem to have a search engine. A bit of work is required, but it's not too painful. The trick is using the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. If you know when the article you'd like to see the comments on was originally posted, go to the archived main page close to that date. Once you find the article, copy the URL and go back to the Wayback Machine's search engine. It will bring up the various times that article got archived. If you go to the most recent archive (or at least something in the 2014-2015 range), the article should pop up along with all its comments--at least to that date. As I said, it takes a bit of work, but it's better than nothing. Edit: For example, here's the URL to the 2015 archive of a savage 2010 book review by swagonion with a highly entertaining comment section: web.archive.org/web/20150116112655/http://www.avclub.com/review/chevy-stevens-emstill-missingem-44074

Ok folks, what is the email address for Kinja Ernie? Because if my laptop ever dies I will be eternally locked out of my ported account.

I still haven't tried to register on Kinja; this burner-only account option for me (I don't have any social media accounts) is really irritating to me. Anyways, it seems like the site design is actually getting worse, even from last week's relaunch .Damn straight; I'd planned to sign up for a Kinja legacy account just to comment on Random Roles (and maybe the Comics pages if they're still doing that), but all the problems they're having, whether by design or no, have pretty much decided me against it. I can still access my old Disqus comments in my search bar, so I think I'll just keep those. It'll be weird to keep seeing that comment about PJ Harvey supporting foxhunting as my very last AVC salvo, but maybe it's fitting.

And where am I supposed to read Dan Savage now? The Stranger? There was talk of linking to it and hosting comments on the Avocado. I'm not gonna be the one to do it because I'm in charge of enough threads there already, but I'll post here if someone does start a weekly thread for it.

Great, civil, informative, honest discussion about relationships and all sorts of things.

I made a comment on Sam B's article about the new Deerhoof album. It is pending and it is the second comment total. What does the Kinjamprove button do, anyway?
EDIT: And of course, I double posted because it looked like my post disappeared. Turns out it's under "Discussions" along with my weird blog thingie. I swear, Kinja has some sort of hiccup in registering posts and "recommendations" (upvotes). This will cause much confusion, I think.

Kinjamprove shows all comments, including pending, and threads deeper. the pending is to help prevent trolls... If you're followed by a staffer or link your burner to a legacy account (TK) it'll ungrey you for good.

Got my new Kinja account ungreyed yesterday, while waiting for the legacy account switch that I suspect will never happen, and figured I'd chuck in a question about the old comments at the same time. Was told this by Ernie himself:
"Old comments are starting to port in as of today. There are some 10 million comments to bring in, so it could take a while. Thanks for your patience."
Has anyone seen any old comments anywhere? They don't seem to be on the TV Reviews of old shows I'm currently watching.

That became a Wednesday morning ritual for me, and was definitely one of my favorite parts of the AV commentariat. Yep. I've loved the mothership over the years for all sorts of reasons, but I think SL's the part I that's had the most tangibly beneficial effect on specific parts of my life. Even (especially) when I was down, or (in recent months) have had little to nothing to post, I was heartily glad it was there.

Well they're making it real hard to stay away the past couple days. Yesterday we had that Memory Wipe on Secret of NIMH, a childhood favorite, and today there's The Day After, Chinese BBQ, and now a staffer's first hand account of growing up under the specter of Houston flooding.

I'll pop in for stuff I know is good, such as the History of Violence column, maybe the occasional Random Roles, and so on. hopefully they clean up the site design eventually with whatever modifications they make to the whole Kinja thing. (I hope that would permit for a proper front-end redesign so it's actually usable on desktop, where I am inclined to do most of my reading.)

Fuck it, I registered and sent a pleading email to their help desk, for whatever that was worth. So now, yes, all my wonderful insightful comments are grayed, and languishing for approval from staff, and when they are it'll be too late to get notice. Boo. Also, someone else mentioned this earlier in the thread but: I click a recommend next to a post, and the star count goes down. Da fah?

How do you even find them? Seriously. I can't find anything worth reading on the site except the Supper Club Chinese BBQ thing because it was briefly on top of the homepage. Do you just catch them on the homepage or are you navigating somewhere where they hide the good stuff?

Do you just catch them on the homepage or are you navigating somewhere where they hide the good stuff? It's part of their hideous design. If it's the banner box, the author is featured. If it's one of the "side boxes" at the top, there's nothing besides the headline to go on. Once it sinks down to the bar, below, author name shows back up.

Welp, I'm hooked again. I certainly don't like the redesign and my god Kinja is user hostile, but it's nice getting to chat with everyone over there again, especially on the Houston Flood Kid article and learn how many posters there are or were from Houston.

I've been suffering from crushing boredom and I can't help but come wandering back, there's just nothing I can think of that could replace the Av Club.
The only problem is, how do I become "ungrayed" every post I make has to be approved but I thought if you already had a disqus account that wouldn't be the case, was that all just a bunch of bullshit?

I've been suffering from crushing boredom and I can't help but come wandering, there's just nothing I can think of that could replace the Av Club. I don't even own an AV Club. Sure, I miss it sometimes. But there's plenty of stuff to read online and as for this community, well, who knows if I'm a good fit here. As for now, my Internet needs are pretty well satiated.
