Rules for quitting AVKinja.
1) Don't pick up the phone, you know he's only calling cause he's drunk and alone. 2) Don't let him in, you'll have to kick him out again. 3) Don't be his friend, you know you're gonna wake up in his bed in the morning. And if you're under him, you're not getting over him.

I've been suffering from crushing boredom and I can't help but come wandering, there's just nothing I can think of that could replace the Av Club. The only problem is, how do I become "ungrayed" every post I make has to be approved but I thought if you already had a disqus account that wouldn't be the case, was that all just a bunch of bullshit? I had to just beg directly to be ungreyed to the kinja support email. It worked, though!

Of course, you're still screaming into the abyss once you're approved, but at least the abyss can hear you!

They just ported over all the old comments, like two minutes ago. Somebody should have taken me up on that bet.
ETA: or they tried to. I got my most recent notifications from my last few Disqus comments via Kinja, and those pages have the Disqus comments. I looked at some old articles and they don't have the Disqus comments ported yet.

I'm honestly surprised they are even bothering to try porting comments over. I wonder if they're doing it out of an actual desire to help out commenters or to not look bad.

Still grayed Best advice I've read is comment on the Gamelogical articles since those authors actually read and respond to comments. I guess if one of them approves one of your comments you become ungrayed? Correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't really tried yet.

I think I got in by linking to my Disqus-only account which I created a while back that only had like 5 comments. Had to link to my Twitter but that's basically a burner too. Seems to be ungreyed too. Now to find something worth commenting on.

Damn it I'm used to waking up and seeing the WoT post with hundreds of comments and feeling sad because nobody will see mine. Now I wake up and see that WoT has 22 comments and I feel sad because...22 comments? Yeesh.

I'm pretty sure there's now a What's On TOnight channel on disqus - when I looked at it the other day, there was all the usual stuff on it.

I guess if one of them approves one of your comments you become ungrayed? Correct me if I'm wrong as I haven't really tried yet. You become permanently ungreyed if an author follows you - which they are doing pretty readily. I got followed by AVC Food without even asking when I commented on an article. Presumably when AVC-legacy account linking happens this week, you should also be permanently ungreyed. Be patient.

I got a definitive answer from Luca at Kinja that I need a social-media-connected permanent Kinja account to port over legacy accounts. So burner accounts won't do.

Yeah I'm wishing I'd just created a fake twitter account for my port over as the burner appears perma-fucked now.

Well, that's stupid, considering they told us otherwise. But eh, whatever, I don't care. I'm ungreyed and don't care about my comment history that much. We are all dust in the wind.

I have no idea if old comments are going to come over, but the good news is that they are still quickly accessible--or at least more quickly accessible then looking for Disqis's archive, which doesn't seem to have a search engine. A bit of work is required, but it's not too painful. The trick is using the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. If you know when the article you'd like to see the comments on was originally posted, go to the archived main page close to that date. Once you find the article, copy the URL and go back to the Wayback Machine's search engine. It will bring up the various times that article got archived. If you go to the most recent archive (or at least something in the 2014-2015 range), the article should pop up along with all its comments--at least to that date. As I said, it takes a bit of work, but it's better than nothing. Edit: For example, here's the URL to the 2015 archive of a savage 2010 book review by swagonion with a highly entertaining comment section: web.archive.org/web/20150116112655/http://www.avclub.com/review/chevy-stevens-emstill-missingem-44074Is anyone able to read the comments on the link above? Because, suddenly, I can't. I don't know if it's just my work computer or if suddenly the Wayback Machine no longer has the comments. The discussions are still available on Disqus's page, though.

Between Birth.Movies.Death, Polygon, and Waypoint, I've been pretty well satisfied with my non-AVC content sources lately*. I just need to find a music site I actually like and I'm set.
*because I have this place for the people. Also the BMD commentariat isn't terrible usually.

Stereogum has a decent comments section though they can be a little snooty at times. I should sign up there finally.

I tried BMD after the Dissolve dissolved but couldn't get into it because trying new things is hard. Better give it another shot. I miss the long form essays that used to be on the AVC but didn't seem like they came up with the hot-take headline first and then tried to write the rest of the article to that.

I've been hanging around there all day and didn't even see it post, thanks to their muddled display.

I didn't stick around long either, maybe half an hour. I went back like twice for five minutes both times and that was that. A far cry from the days when I sat and read it all through my lunch hour and well into the afternoon.

The Kinjapocalypse is over. Now the Kinja Hegemony rules over what remains of the once proud Audio Visual Club. Look upon ye old comments and weep.
