I think the harsh reality is that commenting just isn't important to anyone but the commenters. Kinja killed the commenting star. That's a feature, not a bug. It is what it is. Etc.

I know we've been talking about the decreased comment count under articles, but it seems like a real line was crossed somewhere in the past few days and now they are positively anemic. Overnight politics threads having only 60 comments? Even the trolls are staying away. This week's Ask the AVClub only has 18 (approved) comments so far, and usually it's 300 deep by the time I get to it early in the morning. I want to comment on the comfort food thread, but there's so little activity it's just making me sad. Plus I'm torn -- do I help the site and stick around and comment using that awful interface, or do I hasten the death of something I've loved for so long? There's alot of known posters still in the grays there so I was starring them and replying to them where I could to get them out.

I don't miss Disqus at all. It was always a pain in the ass. This place is fine. The AV Club lives here now.

I think this is kind of overstating it. Other Kinja blogs have fairly healthy commenting communities (to the extent commenting can be considered healthy)—really, I think the problem of the new AVC is very much the problem of the AVC immediately pre-Kinja: as Dellarigg noted, you can basically read all the worthwhile content in a day in the space of a few minutes. There isn’t much worth reading, at least to a lot of people who became acquainted with the site pre-2014 or pre-2015, and a lot of the commenting was probably out of a sense of inertia. Kinja breaks that inertia, and while I’ve liked a few things I’ve seen on the site since then (IV’s movie article today which turned into a mini-essay on how writing for print shaped his style, and his earlier article on Ridley Scott’s commercials), nothing’s prompted me to go through the trouble of registering with Kinja to say something. There just hasn’t been a critical mass of good stuff that makes me want to join in the conversation, or to become anything more than an irregular visitor to the site.

I think that inertia is part of the charm. I never wanted a ton of content from the AV Club. I'd rather have a limited amount of good stuff than a bunch of mediocre crap (which seems like the norm elsewhere on the Internet). The comments were like a second article when they were good. Now the comments are just a garnish on a plate of steaming crap.

There just hasn’t been a critical mass of good stuff that makes me want to join in the conversation, or to become anything more than an irregular visitor to the site. I just found the Comics Panel (which has apparently been split into three days, with Caitlin, Oliver and Shea each taking a different day, it seems) and part of me wants to register a Kinja-specific identity but... man. Something tells me that isn't going to end well. Is just the Comics Panel really enough?

I think the bigger problem is that it's still so damn hard to navigate. Last time I went on, it was ONLY Newswires, and I couldn't find any recent features or reviews. Click on the Film or TV links and BAM!....just directs me to the recent film or TV articles...which are all Newswires.

I feel like AVC has a far more intelligent and well-read crowd than they assume but underestimate that fact. I am not among that crowd’s number being a dim galoot who just wanted to comment on animated comedy shows and didn’t care much for longform pieces or Nabin and his goddamn pills in the jellybeans but I’ve been set aside too so we have that in common.

Let those of us who survived the plague of Newcastle Brown Ale adverts remember, and shudder with horror that the were but a sign of things to come, rather than as we suspected at the time the worst they could ever get. Also, fuck the design of the new site, but I guess that pretty much goes without saying. At least Brown Ale is something I can wholeheartedly endorse. Nowt to do with kinja but I'm drinking one of these now and it's good.

How could we forget the annoying bald singing oatmeal advert guy, who became such a known pest that Captain Dada took the guy's image for his avatar pic and we all instantly knew who it was? In other words, it's a total success to the new overlords. I'm sure. I feel bad for the writers left though, particularly the ones around for the long haul, seeing this thing they build dying slowly. "They bought their tickets; they knew what they were getting into. I say, let 'em crash!"

Hey, I got accused of "dog whistle misogyny" for implying that maybe just possibly Tomi Lahren was hired for her looks rather than her insightful political analysis or journalistic integrity. So that was fun.

I don't want to read anything there anymore. Like, I made it through a Random Roles because it was willharrisinva , but jesus it was such an unpleasant user experience. I'm waiting to see if I can claim my old comments as a legacy AVC account, but then I think I'm out for real.

So, they've stopped moderating, right? That's the only explanation for some of the troll comments that remain up.

I'm waiting to see if I can claim my old comments as a legacy AVC account, but then I think I'm out for real. What infuriates me is that the only way I can sign in is by first signing into my gmail burner account that I created just for the purpose of messing about on AVC and then signing into Kinja. It doesn't give you the option of selecting which google account or facebook profile you want to use. I guess the burner thing works too, but then what happens to your account history? Considering there's only a handful of articles worth reading on the front page any time I go there, i think I'm done too.

Maybe I'll end up commenting on Doctor Who when Alasdair's replacement turns up at Christmas, but beyond that I can't imagine even bothering. I actually work for a digital marketing and advertising company these days and they would be horrified if they saw the layout, design and user experience of the site. It's horrible to navigate, there's no clarity when you want to find anything, there's no way of separating the actual content from the fucking adverts (the single biggest, classic "how to piss off your users" move), and it's just so incredibly indistinct. It could now be any site on the internet, rather than having a clear, unique look to it. The old site wasn't 100% perfect, let's not oversell that side of things, but at least when you saw it you knew what site you were actually on. (Huss, in other news, Alasdair is guesting on Talking Who To You this Tuesday! Woo! We're discussing The Holy Terror)

Why did I go back? The AVC is not what it was and we've got a much lower quality of poster than expected in the comments. Oh well, I mean it's sad to see it decay like this but better to not contribute to the decay.

They're arguing about whether the Beatles were an overrated band or not.

I'm still visiting, but I find I can read everything I want, articles and comments both, in a few minutes. It's not right. Yeah, same boat here. I'll look at it (though less frequently) usually scroll the headlines to see if anything catches my eye, and occasionally click to read an article and/or a few comments. It's a very different experience than it used to be.
