Just before starting my shift this afternoon, I ran into the only other community commenter I know who lives in my town (we've been casual friends for a decade and only realized we both commented on the Mothership maybe a year or two ago; she never commented that much save for certain TV reviews, but it was great to know she was around) and caught up a little (we haven't seen each other since the election, when she hosted a consolatory drink and Bob's Burgers open house); she swung by for lunch and caught me as I was compiling our task board for the evening. The vast majority of our conversation involved Kinjnarok; I can't describe how adorably bizarre it felt to be having a real-life chat about this thing.
She, like me, decided to opt out (though she'll likely be a frequent lurker at the Avocado).

I'm not sure if I successfully merged or not. Primarily, I had an AVClub only account. But a couple of months ago I created a Disqus account so that I could upvote comments on Rabin's website. That's tied into my Twitter account. It turns out that if I am logged into Disqus, and that whole "AVClub logging you out but not really" thing happens, it used my Disqus account to post comments/upvotes. (They both have the same name, but different avatars). So I created a Kinja account also tied to my Twitter account, and then pressed the convert button like 400 times. I commented, and my comment went through without requiring approval. But is it tied to my AVClub only account or my actual Disqus account? I have no idea. There isn't functionality for linking AVC legacy accounts yet, so it must have been Disqus Maybe, but I'm getting notifications for comments that I made with my AVC legacy account. So I'm thinking the whole migration of previous comments may have been a bit more of a manual process than I would have guessed.

I've heard the Avocado is a little mod happy. Though admittedly I've never run afoul of the mods before, it's worth mentioning that the two people who started complaining about the Avocado in my valedictory PCW post had befouled themselves many atime thereon (I'm not sure whether naming names is cool here, but one kept asking me if I was Washington Post writer Maura Judkis in a mildly threatening fashion before accusing another Avocado regular--I can't remember whom--of Holocaust denial, and the other devoted themselves to mild stalking, especially of a specific mod or two, under several different Avocado/AVC handles). My understanding, at least, is that mod overreach in general seems to lie in the past.

Um... what "valedictory PCW post"? My final post (or near enough) for Pop Culture Weekend (a few weeks ago?); I mentioned the Avocado as a possibility and the aforementioned jumped in to complain about it.

I've heard the Avocado is a little mod happy. We mod a little differently than the AVC, is all, primarily in that racism/sexism/etc aren't allowed at all and in that we ask people not to be flirty/sexual with people they don't know. But AFAIK we haven't issued any kind of warning at all in quite a while, and we've only banned obvious trolls and spambots in the last several months.

I know we've been talking about the decreased comment count under articles, but it seems like a real line was crossed somewhere in the past few days and now they are positively anemic. Overnight politics threads having only 60 comments? Even the trolls are staying away. This week's Ask the AVClub only has 18 (approved) comments so far, and usually it's 300 deep by the time I get to it early in the morning. I want to comment on the comfort food thread, but there's so little activity it's just making me sad. Plus I'm torn -- do I help the site and stick around and comment using that awful interface, or do I hasten the death of something I've loved for so long?

Also I’m quite sure Dave Weigel at the Washington Post was at least a regular AVC reader, particularly before the Dissolve split—the Chicago leg of his book tour was hosted by Scott Tobias and he once mentioned on twitter something about the AVC being the only example of a pop culture to politics website he could think of.

I'm getting overloaded with notifications, which makes it impossible to see if I got an real ones in there unless they're one of the last 5, or I want to dig through the terrible dashboard panel. On top of that, I'll get the notification before it may properly display, so if something leaps out to me and I want to see the context, I can't find it.

This article ended up getting hijacked for people complaining about the spot.im test and how thankful it made us for disqus. It also features a ton of people saying something to the effect, "At least we're not on kinja." (uncontrollable sobbing)

There's an article over there on Obama's statement on Trump ending DACA, I know we had trolls before, but woo boy, it's like a nest of vipers over there. Not sure if it's worse, or because of how Kinja ranks comments that get lots of replies at the top (at least that's how I understand it) if it just seems that way since all the worst comments come first. Either way, I backed away slowly and ran into the (reasonable) arms of the TI.

I will say this about Kinja: once you're out of the greys--no self-related pun intended, but I had to point out that it occurred to me, er...--once you're not stuck in pending purgatory, it is possible to comment on the topic in a meaningful way. It's needlessly over-formatted and labor-intensive to browse, but it is possible to say something on-topic.
But having conversations or any sense of community? N/A
Maybe the plugins improve some things, but the descent into weird-little-corner-of-voices territory is a sad, sad thing for the AVC.
For any given story, and some features, the writing is still going to be as good or better than most of the alternatives out there, but I find myself asking myself the same questions that others mentioned upthread...is it worth it to try and support anymore? Should I avoid to make a point? Again, very sad.

I scanned a few articles at the Old Country, and saw something about a "Wheelman" movie. I thought "There ought to be fodder for some real lame Family Guy joke there. That could probably piss people off". But it just wasn't worth the pain and effort.
