The Worst Things On The Internet 2017 has a comment section full of the same (only) five people left from the AVC Kinjarmaggeddon complaining about how the site sucks now, and a couple of newbies complaining about the complaints. I will still head over to various GMG sites and most of the other comment sections are vibrant and fun but our poor Old Country is pretty much a dead zone ruled over by The Ghost Of Eazy-E and some whiny newbie called Prince Rupert The Monkey Boy. It's sad.

It's sad. About 75% of my reluctance to partake comes from seeing Prince RTMB at the centre of a skirmish in every thread I look at. That he's also a Brit shouldn't make much difference, but somehow does. |

Yeah, if they had rolled it out with sorting it may have been somewhat salvageable, but it seems obviously too late now.

So just for fun (and by "fun" I mean self-flagellation) I popped into a few random articles on TOC to have a look at the comments and see how things have gone.
Oh fucking dear.
What a shitshow. Look, I know that the page clicks are more important than the "community" and that us Old Timers were there more for symbolic value than anything else, but really it's horrific what the comments have become. People who simply cannot wait to be offended, a series of "well i think this fuck you" threads, straw man arguments, some of the most tedious point-scoring exercises I have ever seen, and people just aching to be seen to be in the right (or, occasionally, on the right). It's like witnessing the death of discussion.
I'm quite happy here.

I got to mention Big Country in the One Hit Wonder thread today (to clarify, they were a one hit wonder in the US; they did respectably for a few years over here, had three or four top 10 hits) and got some nice replies, including one from occasional TIFer Ljo. So that's one bright experience.

Usually when I go up and click on the little icon in the corner (that should show your icon and username but isn't yet) at that pint, it suddenly decides it knows who I am. |
