(Splitting this topic off from the Board Games thread so it can be conveniently ignored like my other posts!) After painting some Gloomhaven miniatures for my friend, the mini bug is getting hold of me again, and now I'm spending far too much time browsing Warhammer 40K, Necromunda, and terrain sites and pictures. I'm really wanting to check out Necromunda specifically, as using miniatures to play a glorified 2D board game is somewhat dull to me. BEHOLD, the terrain sets made by Prometheum Forge on Etsy: Laser-cut MDF pieces made to easily fit together or disassemble for storage! I want to grab one of these sets and paint it up in a nice rusty, industrial style! These guys also make some really neat "Can Tower" kits that work with used aluminum drink cans:

Currently there are two gangs available for Necromunda. The Eschers, Amazonian women warriors: And the Goliaths, 'roided up beasts:

With the box of Space Marines and Rhino I've had stashed in my closet for 12 years, I grabbed a Dark Angels upgrade pack off of eBay last night, so I intend to create this: We'll see how close in quality I can get.

I got my first box of the Goliath minis yesterday, and have assembled five of them so far: Out of curiosity, how many pieces does each contain? Each one is about 10 pieces, give or take. Some of the decisions on pieces seemed silly at first (such as all heads being two parts - neck/mohawk and face), but the way they go together is pretty darn brilliant. All of the places where pieces go together (except for the leg armor plates and grenades, which are optional) have some method to insure that A) they fit together well, and B) align up properly. As I haven't bought GW minis in nearly 20 years, I'm especially blown away by this construction. I'm used to all flat joints that you have to figure out how to align on your own. (Granted, it's easier to customize poses with flat joints, but it's still doable in plastic.) The shoulders on these especially are amazing - the mold line is between the chest straps and the deltoid muscles, so you can't even tell they're separate when assembled!

Next gang to be released will be Orlocks. I love these guys too: But ESPECIALLY this Orlock Boss with cyborg attack dog - SO COOL!

All ten assembled now, save for the guy with the "Rivet Gun" on the right. That thing is so big I need to paint his body before gluing it on.

Because I was having a minor panic attack about "ruining" my Necromunda minis by using cheap craft-store paints, I decided to get a $15 "Easy to Build Plague Marines" set to practice on. Guy on the left is one coat of primer and one base coat of green. Guy on the right is two coats of green. So far so good. The advice to "thin your paints and apply multiple coats to avoid paint blobs ruining detail" seems to work very well. Something I had no idea about last time I painted minis!

I admit I have little to no interest in tabletop miniatures or the games that use them. Even when I play D&D I use a die to represent my character on the grid. So I'm just popping in for the pictures and to let you, ABz B👹anaz , know that you do amazing work.

I hope to be that good when I'm done, and I have high hopes.

Can't imagine trying miniatures, but I love seeing others' work.

Spamming progress pics because I can. Got the priming done on these finally! Also got the second green coat and some pink tentacles painted on the Death Guard, very productive night for painting!

Two nights ago, I was attempting to work on the bases for the Goliaths above, and was getting very frustrated. The Craft Smart metallic paints are TRASH. I tried both bronze and silver, and both came out of the bottle extremely goopy despite heavy shaking, would not mix with water for SHIT even on a wet palette, and would take at LEAST 3 coats to look halfway decent.
So last night I broke down and bought some Citadel paints from the Games Workshop store. I was there to make a trade, so I figured I could spend $20-25 on the expensive shit to see how it worked.
I tried out Leadbelcher when I got home, which is their gunmetal color.
HOLY SHIT, this is 100x better than craft paint! I put a small amount on my wet palette, mixed in some water, and it came out PERFECT. A single coat is good enough to cover the models over the primer, and it didn't change in quality from when I first put it on to when I scraped the last bit off the palette to finish the gun I was painting. If the other paints I bought work this well, I am going to be very happy.
Still, each half-ounce paint pot is $4.50...so I do still intend to try out some Vallejo and Army Painter ones.
-Also, I've apparently been pronouncing "palette" wrong for 30 years. Dammit, a "PALLET" is a wooden frame you store boxes on in a warehouse, so I assumed "PALETTE", being spelled differently, would also SOUND different. NOPE! Both "PALlet" and not "pal-LET".

Weekend Update (with Kevin Nealon!) - As I was getting increasingly frustrated at the poor quality of the craft store paints, I broke down and spent Friday evening and Saturday morning rummaging through my stuff for things to sell. Put up a bunch of my remaining LEGO sets, an unopened Logitech webcam, and a bunch of D&D Miniatures from 2008-2009. Holy shit, this has been my most profitable weekend in about 3 years of selling random stuff! I sold four LEGO sets and the webcam locally, three sets online that I'm shipping out soon, and I ended up taking the D&D Minis to a game store that resells them, and got $210 in store credit! All in all I'm getting around $450! With that money, I bought the Army Painter Mega Set (delivered yesterday), Mansions of Madness for Mrs B., and a few more 40K and Necromunda things. I'm planning to buy one or two more boxes of stuff within a few days once the last big LEGO set is paid for. With the Army Painter paints in hand, I finally felt confident enough to start on my Goliaths last night, but only got a tiny bit done before falling asleep. I'll have more progress pics later in the week. Here's one of the Plague Marines progress, they're coming along well!

And here's my take on the Goliath ganger bases: I'm pretty happy with these. I like the "rust all over" look, though I also like the way the official ones at the top of this thread look, with rust in the lower elevations only.

SLIGHTLY more progress, barely able to even tell the difference at this point: (Another layer of green on the armor, finished off the horns, the middle guy's sword/knife, touched up the flesh, added corrosion on some edges and dirt on their feet/legs, and painted the base edges black.)

And here is the point where I have to start reminding myself to prioritize and "be patient, and don't try to do everything at once".
I set aside the Plague Marines for now. They're 99% done, and I'm taking a break to decide if I really want to try to push them just a little bit further, or stop where they are.
I still have my Necromunda Goliaths that are sitting here primed but not painted.
I also have my two Shadespire warbands sitting here, three Stormcast Eternals and five Khorne Bloodbound. I worked on the Khorne guys some tonight.
I ALSO have three more Easy to Build models assembled, a Space Marine Reivers group.
In the mail are a box with 50 models and another Shadespire box with four seven models. I also have something like six boxes of figures, three vehicles, and a special character.
So as far as priority goes: I'll probably focus on the Shadespire minis first, as that game will be the first one that I can actually play. So 12 15 minis total - the 3 Stormcast, 4 Orks 7 skeletons and 5 Khorne guys.
Everything else will be on the back burner.
(EDIT - I had the Orks in my cart, then realized the Skeleton band was $2 cheaper so I bought them instead.)

As planned, working on Five (Khorne) Guys, Murder and Die: Did you make the bases or did they come like that? I have had trouble adding variation to my bases. Kind of tired of a bit of sand and a bit of grass.

GW has been doing a lot more sculpted bases, which are cool. The Shadespire miniatures all come with modeled bases, and they also sell packs of other base styles including "Hero bases" with large pieces of scenery on them. They also have textured paints for making your own bases. The "mud" on my Plague Marines above is a thick paint that you slab on and push around to make it look muddy. Go to THIS LINK and check out the "Bases" category.

I have been painting for a couple of years, but I have only had time for a handful of figures so I am still working on my skills. But I did set up a pretty cool workspace in my new house. I really like working on the larger pieces, I just find them more forgiving.

My next project: A Genestealer Patriarch looming over the body of a dead Imperial Fist space marine. I got the Deathwatch:Overkill box for Mrs. B's Genestealer Cultists, and this was the first model I saw when I opened it and just HAD to do it first! It comes with a space marine helmet in one hand, so I wanted to add the mangled body to go with it. (Other views here: imgur.com/a/Ci86i )

Here are a few closeups, some are not finished yet. That is kind of the problem, I never quite know when I am finished, there is always something else I could do. I welcome any constructive criticism. I used a gold to red transition on several elements. Some places it works better than others. I like it in the base but not as much in the whip. I think I did not dilute my blue wash enough and it made him a little monotone. I tried to go for a beat up, pieced together look rather than the shiny new look this model is usually painted. I think I did ok, but I am not happy with the wings. I was going for a canvas look and it never really got there. These are some of my more recent completed small figures, I can tell I am getting better. I am still have trouble with shades of brown though. Hard to get a wood look on handles and make it different than every other handle out there.

They're a bit pricey as most GW stuff is, but they are AMAZINGLY good. When I started painting again and was using craft store paint, I used the Shades on top of it and it looked just as good as with better paints. The "Nuln Oil" and "Agrax Earthshade" shades in particular are really nice for metallic stuff.

The local Games Workshop/Warhammer store is hiring a manager, HMU for deets Ha, I seriously doubt they could offer a competitive salary to mine, and/or relocation.

Progress work on the Genestealer Cult's signature vehicle, the Goliath Rockgrinder. (Not to be confused with the Goliath Gang from Necromunda.) My first spray-priming job in over 15 years. (I know, I know, "my first ___ in over 15 years" is getting old.) I was afraid of doing this, but no way am I going to prime vehicles by hand, and this turned out pretty good I think.
