Have any of you miniature folks done any work with spaceships? I have not, not recently anyway. I have in the past built models of the Enterprise-A (with lights and sounds), Enterprise-D, and some Star Wars ships, but not the miniatures. I like the Star Wars miniature ships that I've seen and it would be fun to paint/repaint some, but haven't done so yet.

I received a learning to paint kit for Christmas and just started it. I have been painting off and on for a couple of years, but other than a couple of youtube videos, I am mostly self-taught. I figured this would be a good introduction to the basics that I neglected. These are not done yet, just base coat and wash. I still have a couple rounds of dry brushing and detail work but I think they are coming along. It is nice to have reference photos as it is hard to figure what some elements of the figure are supposed to be on the all white base. I have also learned more about washes, I tended to just use a black or brown wash all over rather than the many different washes they had me do here.

Yeah, I see those Learn to Paint minis a lot on Reddit. Yours look good! I'm learning the joys of multiple washes too. That Poxwalker above, I've now used about 8-9 different washes on various parts, and some double layers of them to make colors darker.

This poxwalker is complete. I enjoyed painting him and those Plague Marines so much that I ended up buying more Nurgle Death Guard minis, so expect to see more of those eventually.

And now my friend who works at (and apparently now manages) the local game store has offered me painting commission jobs in exchange for store credit!!! First up, since the new Codex (rulebook) for the Deathwatch Space Marines chapter just came out, I'm building and painting up a 5-man Veteran Kill Team: I'm excited about this because 1) I am planning to build my own Deathwatch army because I really like the concept - the "best of the best" recruited from the other Space Marine chapters specifically to fight the "Xenos threat", aka any malevolent alien races such as Tyranids, Genestealer Cultists, Orks, Eldar, etc, so this is great practice for my own future army...and 2) if this goes well I can pretty much pick anything that is relatively popular in the store to paint next, including the giant $125-160 box sets, and get that same amount in store credit!

Entering the home stretch - three helmets and the scenic bases and I'll be done. I need to invest in a lightbox for photos though, ugh.

Also, TMNT miniatures progress. Did I mention needing a lightbox? Holy crap this is dark. And it doesn't help that Photoshop no longer works on my increasingly aggravating home PC. I can only assume I've got malware using my system to mine cryptocurrency despite firewalls and TWO antivirus programs.

Most of the first three TMNT minis complete now, enough to where I got my second commission payment and the go-ahead to work on the other 69! The Foot Ninja looks rough because I couldn't see the difference between the two shades of black paint until I took the photos, so he'll be touched up with the rest of them. But otherwise these are turning out pretty nice!

Got a new photography tent kit, and testing it out. Here is a comparison of the Donatello mini: I have to tweak things a bit more, but it's coming along. It would be really helpful if my fucking home PC hadn't decided it isn't going to run Photoshop any more, so I have to do simple crops in Paint but can't adjust colors or levels. This kit is pretty nice for being relatively cheap. It came with 4 LED lights, a tripod and phone holder, the tent and five cloth backgrounds of various colors for $55.

I think I posted in the Tabletop Games thread that I started playing Warhammer 40k three weeks ago. I'm enjoying it, with the narrative campaign one guy is running where you start out with 500 points for your army, then each week can play up to three games and roll for territories that give you additional points for future games. I'm up to 850 points after three weeks (having rolled two "special" territories that give in-game bonuses instead of army points).
I had my favorite game so far last night, thanks mostly to a single guy in my army. First, the setup:
The mission was for my army, the Deathwatch Marines, to attack an area defended by Death Guard, chaos marines who worship Nurgle, the God of Pestilence. Their thing is that most units get additional saving throws to represent their resilience, and ability to shrug off all but the worst wounds due to their zombie-like nature. If I managed to kill ALL of his army within the time limit, I would win, otherwise he wins by default for surviving.
My opponent (the dude who first showed me how to play 40k before this campaign started, super cool guy) had a Daemon Prince who is seriously bad news, being super tough in ADDITION to that "shrugging off wounds" ability, and very nasty in melee combat as well. He also had a "Bloat Drone", which, with the way he equipped it, was almost as deadly as the Daemon Prince but slightly less tough. (Imagine a flying lawnmower that can shred enemy troops.) He also had some poxwalkers (like the one I painted early in this thread), some cultists, a Rhino (troop transport), and his Chaos Lord with plague marine bodyguards.
In my force, I had my Captain, a Librarian (psychic) with a jump pack allowing him to fly, a group of six Primaris marines, two squads of five Veterans with lots of guns, a single Hellblaster (plasma-armed ranged guy for heavy firepower shots against high-armor targets), and two Reivers - close range shock troops with the ability to drop into the battlefield on "grav chutes". (I had 700 points for this battle, I got the extra 150 afterward.)
There were a few side battles where my troops destroyed all of his poxwalkers and cultists while taking a single hit. But I focused everything I could on his Daemon Prince, knowing if it ran amok it could shred large parts of my army.
I attacked the Prince with my Captain, veterans, Librarian and the Reivers. I got a large number of hits on the Prince by shooting at him, charging, hitting in melee, and some Psychic damage from the Librarian, but he was super tough, and also healed himself a bit in between rounds. This bastard was shrugging off HUGE amounts of damage. For example, my veterans got SIXTEEN attacks on him in melee...they would hit with 8-9 of them, only 2 or 3 would "wound" him, but he would shrug off the wounds, taking no damage.
Finally, after several of the veterans, a Reiver and my Librarian died, I got him down to one wound for the SECOND time...and my Reiver Sergeant got the killing blow...with a combat knife.
Immediately after this, the Bloat Drone flew in and attacked the survivors, mowing through them and doing a lot of damage, killing my captain in the process, but taking plenty of damage in return...
...until the Reiver Sergeant got the killing blow AGAIN. (At that point both of us were cheering for him, and he got "All Star" of the match.)
The drone exploded upon death, killing everyone else near it, except the Sergeant.
Finally, he ran after the Chaos Lord to try and get him out before the end of the mission, but the bodyguards took him out.
I ended up losing the battle because his Lord and bodyguards held out until the end (I have actually lost ALL of the games I've played so far, though I've come close to winning a couple of times), but that single Reiver is MVP of my army at this point! He'll be getting a nice customization and paint job to represent his Schwarzenegger-like damage and resilience!

Here is my progress on the Imperial Knight "miniature". He stands about 9" tall. I will be painting it in pieces. The weapons on top are magnetized to allow swapping out "two guns and one missile launcher" or "one gun and two missile launchers", and the arms are easily removable if you have extras to swap them out with. I will also be magnetizing the top carapace armor to the frame to allow it to be removed to swap the arms. The armor panels on the table below the model will be painted separately, as well as the top carapace. That way I can spray the entire frame with metallic spray and the armor with black spray before adding additional colors.

Bought a replacement squad of "Reivers", assault troops that have grapple guns (allowing them to traverse high terrain like buildings quickly, AND start the battle behind enemy lines!), grav chutes (allowing them to deploy from the air at the start of the battle), and bolt carbines, heavy pistols and a combat knife for the Sergeant. This is the new Sergeant to reflect the skilled guy from two posts above.

Played again tonight. Lost again!
At the end of the fight, my last men standing were a single Hellblaster (plasma gun troop whose entire squad was killed before him, including his sergeant who died by his own plasma pistol exploding), and two of the Reivers immediately above, sergeant included, who fought a mob of cultists 4 to 20 and lost two men over four rounds before the cultists were all dead.
Both the Sergeant and the lone remaining Hellblaster are now getting custom paint jobs.

Starting some new minis to give as gifts to my D&D group, also parts of a zombie dragon in progress in the back. I am liking the wiz kids deep cut, pre-primed minis so far (Direwolf, wizards and bugbear in this pic.) This is the first time I have strayed away from Reaper and they take the paint really well, I worry a bit about clogging the fine details though.

Well, I've taken up painting miniatures as well. I have experience with painting on traditional media like canvas so it's not like I'm starting from zero, though it's been a while since I've painted anything. I just bought regular acrylics from an art supply store instead of the special miniature paints. I talked about it with the guy from the store (I think he was an art student) and he said that the paints should be fine, I just need to water them down properly to allay clumping and whatnot. Anyway, I tried it out and he was right. I've only been painting for a couple of weeks but my technical skill has improved a lot already. I still need to figure out drybrushing but it doesn't look horribly difficult. Also, I get the impression that most miniature painters just use paints straight from the bottle. Is this correct? If so, I'm kind of surprised because I remember my old art teacher saying never to use paints directly and to always mix colours. I actually like mixing the paints because then I get the exact shade I want. I've got to say, I find painting people to be boring. First I have to get the skin colour right. Second, fantasy RPG characters wear a lot of leather and it's boring using brown to paint all those belts and straps. I'm going to try black leather and whatnot. Monster painting is much more enjoyable for me. I'm almost finished with a couple of pieces so I'll upload some pics. I actually have those bugbears that nowimnothing mentioned. I tried taking some pics before but apparently my phone camera isn't the greatest with extreme closeups.

I tried taking some pics before but apparently my phone camera isn't the greatest with extreme closeups. Cool! Yeah, for my part, the reason I started using the actual "miniature paints" was a consistency of quality issue. Some of the cheaper paints were good, but any of the really vibrant colors (like red, yellow or blue) were so poor that I would have had to apply five or six thin coats to get even coverage. I'm using primarily Citadel and Vallejo paints now, and 99% of them are excellent and only take 1 or 2 coats. As for "out of the bottle", this is the case a lot of the time, but I do also mix my own colors in small amounts. Heh, if you're getting bored painting people, try adding more detail. The standard procedure for Games Workshop miniatures uses a couple of paints and a shade (ink wash) for everything. So for leather, you'd start with a brown, use a dark brown shade, and then highlight the edges with a lighter brown.

I made a test base for the planned scenery for the TMNT minis. I'm very happy with how this turned out...asphalt with a discarded newspaper and soda can! The guy who commissioned these was also happy with it.

Okay, picture time. Here are some works in progress: bugbears, town guards, a skeleton. The two gargoyles are done and just need a spray of the fixative. Apparently it's best to do that when humidity is low so I'm waiting until the weather clears up on the weekend. I'm not sold on the colour of the bugbear armour yet and am thinking of making it a red lacquer for the black one and a darker shade for the brown one. I have some kobolds I'm saving until I get better as the figures are small and have a bunch of tiny details.

Also trying to finish up my new Khârn the Betrayer model by Thursday evening for a (no stakes, just for fun) painting competition on the Warhammer 40k Discord channel. I may have already mentioned it here in weeks' past, but the old metal Khârn was the first miniature I painted way back in the mid-to-late 1990s. So when I got back into miniature painting this year, I just HAD to pick him up to do a re-do. (Too bad I don't have the original mini, or even a picture, to compare) Progress shot.

You might try a wash or drybrush with a different shade on the armor before changing the color. I am always amazed at how much better that makes them look. I am going for a kind of reddish fur on one of mine too. We will have to have a bugbear-off once we are done.

My own preference is for contrasting colours, which is why I'm not liking how the armour isn't popping against the fur more. But thinking on it further, red lacquer and shining brass might not go well together. I'll have to consider the colour combination a bit further. Also, let me tell you now that I'm not going to try for the tiny details with the bugbears, so their tusks and the jewels in the armour aren't getting any special treatment. But I would be interested in seeing your own take on them.
