Bunch of BIG announcements last night about Warhammer 40k's 10th Edition coming this summer, and I'm actually excited about maybe playing the game again instead of just collecting/painting the minis. The rules are going to be free for all armies, they'll be simplified down to one page of rules for each army and one datacard per unit, your force you use in a game will just be "a warlord and any other units you want, up to a max of 3 of each type (up to 6 for 'battleline', probably troops)". One of the reasons I stopped playing the actual game was I got really frustrated at trying to remember all of the rules for my OWN army, let alone any opponents, and this sounds like it'll be SO much easier and more fun! The free rules especially is huge. No more buying $200, $300, $400 worth of miniatures and then also having to buy an $80 rulebook for the game and a $50-60 codex for your army just to be able to play. My strategy of not buying ANY codexes during the entirety of 9th Edition for the last 2-3 years (except the one that came with an army box set) paid off! A Mindblowing New Edition of Warhammer 40,000 is Coming

"Those sticky complexities have now been smoothed out, and without losing any of the game’s depth. These much-needed simplifications are substantial enough that, from a rules perspective at least, every ninth edition codex has been rendered obsolete. That’s not to say they’re useless – they’re still bursting with the lore, history, and short stories that define each faction, and until new codexes emerge over the course of the new edition, these books will still be the main repository of the knowledge you need." www.warhammer-community.com/2023/03/28/warhammer-40000-what-does-the-new-game-mean-for-your-codexes/Never fucking mind.

Out of boredom I attended a mini painting workshop a few months back and have now done that a few times as well as some terrain. Given I don't currently play any tabletop game it's kind of silly but I've enjoyed a bit of a creative outlet during winter.

Nothing wrong with that, frequently the painting is more fun anyway.

And now my friend who works at (and apparently now manages) the local game store has offered me painting commission jobs in exchange for store credit!!! First up, since the new Codex (rulebook) for the Deathwatch Space Marines chapter just came out, I'm building and painting up a 5-man Veteran Kill Team: [IMAGE REMOVED] I'm excited about this because 1) I am planning to build my own Deathwatch army because I really like the concept - the "best of the best" recruited from the other Space Marine chapters specifically to fight the "Xenos threat", aka any malevolent alien races such as Tyranids, Genestealer Cultists, Orks, Eldar, etc, so this is great practice for my own future army...and 2) if this goes well I can pretty much pick anything that is relatively popular in the store to paint next, including the giant $125-160 box sets, and get that same amount in store credit! HA, five years ago yesterday I got the commission to paint my first Deathwatch space marines. I ended up collecting a bunch of them, barely painted any, and sold off the entire army last year. So of course NOW because I'm excited about the 10th Edition of Warhammer 40k, I've started building a NEW Deathwatch army along with the World Eaters I've recently started collecting and the Genestealer Cults which I love too much to ever sell (probably). First up, an Outrider - one of the newer, larger space marine bikes - with custom 3D printed Deathwatch-style armor panels!

Finally, after WAY too long, I finished the TMNT commission I took on five years ago. Shipping them out today tomorrow. Stupid Columbus Day! Rename it or get rid of it as a holiday.

Semi-amusingly, Games Workshop decided to completely invalidate Deathwatch space marines as a standalone army. They are now only available as either a generic space marines force, or as a small portion of an Imperial Agents army which includes inquisitors, rogue traders, assassins, and demon hunters. Fortunately, that is exactly the type of army I like, so I am now in the process of selling off all of my used Space Marines and buying up a bunch of disparate kits to build a new army for a new escalation league starting in a week and a half! Everything purchased, just have to get it in the mail on time. I have about 15 minis built out of 50 that I need to build AND paint by then. Wish me luck?!

What I have built so far: Rogue Trader Entourage Assassins (Eversor, Culexus, Vindicare) Inquisitor Kyria Draxus and Ministorum Priest Inquisitorial Agents Deathwatch Kill Team 1 That's about half my starting force built. So about 25-30 more figures and two vehicles to START my escalation league. Fun! And I still have to paint them all.

And for my army Warlord, we have THIS magnificent specimen: This is a limited edition "store anniversary" Inquisitor that I was very fortunate to get from an online trader for 50% of the going rate. So excited to use him!

Warlord progress. He will not be gold when I'm done, I just decided to try painting his armor the trim color first, then fill in the plate color (which will be black) second. Also, the flame on the book is still wet, that will not look the same upon completion either.

I have a bunch of games with a ton of minis - Zombicide, the D&D boxed 'random dungeon' games from the early '10s, etc. Realizing that I'll never play them I won't play them until I move into a retirement home, I figured I might as well use them as practice for painting. I don't care about them much, so messing them up until I 'get good' is not an issue.
Also, I'm bored, so I've been watching a lot of 40K lore and painting videos. I'm also never going to play that, because I already play Magic and I don't need two expensive hobbies that I can't find players for, and when I do they're mostly neckbeards.
Most of the 40k videos are by various flavors of Brits, and the setting has Terra (earth) and a galactic anomaly called The Eye of Terror, and they all pronounce Terror and Terra as though they were the same word, which gets confusing.

Well, since the undead/"He's only MOSTLY dead" Emperor requires 10,000 souls per day to be sacrificed to him to give him the psychic power to keep the forces of Chaos at bay (somehow), they're not all that different. I've played four games of 40k now with my new Imperial Agents army and am having a blast. Largely because the store I play at is very LGBTQIA+ friendly so the usual crowd of potentially asshole-ish players generally goes elsewhere. All four of my opponents have ranged so far from "pretty nice" to "one of the nicest people I've ever played a game against". Actually having a lot of fun despite losing HORRIBLY in every game because of my experience level AND knowing ahead of time my army is kind of sub-par or requires a lot of skill. I'm definitely learning though.

Most of the people I've played with have been great, too, and like most things, the 'geeks with poor hygiene' thing hasn't come up all that often. It's more a matter of not needing another expensive hobby to tote around every five years or so, and finding players for either is enough of a challenge that I don't need to split my focus. But painting seems fun, satisfies my 'hobby that I can develop some expertise with' itch, and I can probably keep stuff in the office so I can paint during teams / zoom calls, etc. And if I 'get good' I can start doing card alters.

After five games with my Agents army, adding new units every time and still losing horribly, I got fed up and quit playing that army. Might split it up and still some of the units that can be used in other armies. Meanwhile I went back to working on my Genestealer Cults army that I haven't played in five years. Proudly finished painting my first medium-size vehicle ever, an Achilles Ridgerunner! Complete with mud/asphalt effects.

And here's a miniature I finished for Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion for my two friends who are playing it separately from our main campaign. This is the level 5 upgrade for the Demolitionist. The original mini was too small for me to really get much detail, so I made up for it with this one instead. The fists say "BIG BYE" because the small mini had "BYE" on its left fist.
