Got my figures done for my D&D group. I think the Gnoll turned out best. Not too happy with the elf archer but the others are ok. The male Gnome is me, he is roughly based on the Wee Free Men from Discworld. He drinks a lot, covered in blue tattoos and is a bit insane. I customized a couple. Our sorcerer carries a huge hammer even though she is terrible with it. And the Tabaxi has cheetah markings with a "white fluffy mohawk". That was my first time working with green stuff. I wish it were not so sticky. It was easier to just make a general shape and then trim when it was hard.

So there's going to be another Warhammer 40k escalation campaign, run by the same guy who did the last one I enjoyed so much. I was considering running my Deathwatch marines again, but seeing the initial people signing up were about 10 Imperium armies (Marines, AdMech, Imperial Guard) versus 4 Xenos/Chaos, I decided to bite the bullet and try out the Genestealer Cult instead. I've been collecting these minis off and on for the last nine months despite never having played them (because Mrs B also loves their style and the lore behind them), so I already have 95% of the minis I need to start this campaign, so here we go! I assembled ten of these 11 minis over the weekend (1 was already built prior): The big dude in the middle is an Abominant. He's a massive, mutated brute who hits like a truck with his sledgehammer (3x the strength of your average Space Marine, does a minimum of 3 damage) heals wounds every turn, and the little familiar clinging to his side reduces enemy Psychic rolls and attacks with his own claws after the Abominant does! (Later on, when I have the points to add a unit of Aberrants - the "regular" brutes of the GSC army - the Abominant buffs their attacks and stats too!) The ten Acolytes around him are half-human, half-genestealer hybrids with lots of nasty pistol and knife attacks, along with a couple of cool extra weapons (the Heavy Rock Saw and Heavy Rock Drill). The Drill is probably my favorite crazy weapon: "Roll a D6 each time a model suffers damage from this weapon; on a 2+ the model suffers a mortal wound and you can roll another D6. This time, the model suffers a mortal wound on a 3+. Keep rolling a D6 increasing the score required to cause a mortal wound by 1 each time, until the model is slain or the roll is failed." So after the initial hit with the drill, it can keep drilling and do more and more damage! Anyway, in addition to these guys, I have about 20-25 additional troops to assemble and paint by February 21st! (I'm getting a head start so I have time to accomplish this.) I plan to get them painted to tabletop quality, and not spend a shit-ton of time obsessing about perfection. (Here are the GW painted versions of a couple of these for a better view:)

And more minis to add to the army! These are Neophyte Hybrids, near-human genestealer cultists. I have approximately 17 more of these to assemble.

And I now have all 33 miniatures assembled and ready to start painting! (Plus a handful of extras in case I switch equipment around.) The Abominant, two Acolyte Iconwards, two 5-"man" Acolyte Hybrid squads, and two 10-man Neophyte Hybrid squads! (For anyone who's interested, this is just under 500 points of miniatures for my campaign. By comparison, my prior Deathwatch army could field...17 men at this point range. Granted, Space Marines are tougher units, but still. This is a right proper SWARM of nasty things! )

Side note that made my day - despite the fact that I am six months overdue on the TMNT miniatures commission, the customer is still happy enough with my work to talk to me about potentially painting the NEW edition of the game that's coming out around November, with improved miniatures!
(Part of the reason for my delay of the current job is the quality of the minis is mediocre. Shredder was missing blades, the scale of the characters is WAY off (random thugs are taller than Super Shredder?), and the sculpts are kind of lacking. The new edition looks to be much higher quality.)

Having a ton of fun building and painting these guys, and their official Codex (rulebook) is finally coming out for preorder next weekend! Major WIP shots (only base colors, no shading applied yet).

So after the Genestealer Cults Codex was released a few weeks ago, I had to change up my army list quite a bit, and have been working on these guys since: This is the starting force for my new campaign. It now consists of a Genestealer Patriarch (the giant clawed thing in the center, the vicious psychic leader and progenitor of the Cult), the Magus, a gunslinger Kelermorph and a Sanctus assassin, ten Neophytes (on the left) and ten Acolytes (on the right). 24 dudes instead of 33, but each week I'll be adding 150 more points of models and vehicles (including transport trucks, dirt bikes and quads) will be added in the future! I REALLY wanted to get these guys fully painted by Thursday. I'm not sure that's going to happen now, with only two evenings to accomplish it. But I made good progress over the weekend, and still managed to help out around the house enough that my long hours of painting weren't a problem!

Those guys on the right in the last photo, I made good progress last night, assembly-line painting the light grey armor and blue carapaces: I'll have to be happy with my starting army being 85-90% painted by tomorrow, that should be fine.

My first game as Genestealer Cults last Thursday went well. All of my special minis did their jobs perfectly - the Sanctus sniper got a headshot on the enemy psychic, exploding him and damaging the guys next to him too...the Patriarch charged forward and murdered a ton of guys, shrugging off multiple hits and healing others on the way...the Magus and Patriarch both used psychic powers to blast guys to pieces...and despite me mistakenly starting the Gunslinger too far away, once he got into range in the last turn of the game, he single-handedly shot down four marines. I ended up losing four dudes out of 24, and wiped out my opponent's 15 Space Marines. "The Guns-Slinger" deserved a completed paint job, and the Patriarch will be getting one next. For this week, I'm assembling eight dirt bikes and two quads to add to the army.

More progress (and a less blurry photo) for the Patriarch. Hopefully he'll be pleased enough with his paintjob to do even better in my games tomorrow night!

For this week, working on a Locus, a bodyguard unit for other characters who can jump in front of them and take damage, and also deal out large amounts of melee attacks with his swords:

Some of the classic D&D names I just don't get. "Bugbears" are neither bug-like or bear-like, except for the fur.
Minis are cool!
Painting people gets easier with time. I still can't DRAW people for shit. But I can paint miniatures fine.

So I showed up on Thursday for the last game of my Warhammer campaign, and 1) I was feeling kind of woozy, and 2) the campaign host hadn't actually posted any objectives for the week, and 3) Mrs B left work late so I took off before playing a game to act as backup in case she couldn't get to Baby B's school before they closed (and start charging by the minute for overtime pay). She made it there okay. I was kind of disappointed though at missing a game. I could show up next Thursday which is technically the last day (each week of the six-week campaign starts and ends on a Thursday, so we're mid-week-six now), but I don't know if I will or not. The campaign host being either too busy or just not that interested in the campaign is kind of a downer. I did chat with the guys and watch part of a fun-looking match before I left though. Ultramarines versus Salamanders, both Space Marine chapters. Anyway, since I have no more minis that I need to build/paint for myself right away now, back to working on commissions. Here's the second set of Gloomhaven miniatures I'm working on, for the same guy who I'm painting the TMNT minis for. I plan to have all six of these completed by tomorrow so I can ship them to him on Monday. First progress pic of the day around 3pm, And at 8:30pm. It's hard to tell from the pic, but all six have some shading applied in addition to the extra details painted in. (I missed the skulls on the kneepads of the Brute in the back left, gotta paint those too.) The Spellweaver in back center's flames are white because I'm going to be attempting simulated light from both of them as I did with the first one, but brighter.

I ended up finishing these six miniatures YESTERDAY, so yeah, it took a week longer than planned. (Which of course also included an argument with my wife over the time I was spending on painting over other chores...sorry I'm slow at this and the client kept asking for a dozen last-minute changes until I finally had to politely remind him that I need to finish these so I can take a break from painting for like two weeks.) I'll be taking "professional" photos tonight and then packing them up to ship out to him. EDIT - Here we go!

As soon as my client and I posted the photos of the completed commission above in various places, I got four or five inquiries and one additional actual paid commission request (prepaid in advance!) to do six more of these miniatures just like these! So excited!
(Not to mention that the guy I painted these for - and am still working on finishing up the TMNT minis for - also has me lined up for 3 or 4 more jobs over the next 6-7 months!)

Finished up another Gloomhaven mini for my own group, this time the Doomstalker. (I'll be painting another one of these for my main client in the next month or so as well.)

Wow, it's been a whole four months since I posted here. Busy time - I got another commission for the starting six Gloomhaven figures immediately after finishing the previous set - then got sick for 3 weeks again, packed up our entire townhome to list for sale so we could upgrade to a bigger standalone house with a yard and no HOA fees (still waiting for someone to make an offer) - so I took way too long on the commission and the customer got annoyed and asked for them to be sent back incomplete. (I stated a one month turnaround time, and had them for four months, so totally understandable.) So I rushed the last few finishing touches and mailed them out over the weekend along with a partial refund for the bases being lesser quality than I'd planned, and she still said she loved them, so that's good. I'll definitely adjust my promised timeframes for future commissions to allow for delays. This was the last progress shot I sent her, a month ago, and I didn't take a final pic because it wasn't my best work, but I did finish coloring in all of the bases at least.

Wow, I haven't updated THIS thread in a while.
Last night was the first time I did any mini painting since we moved to the new house. Only an hour, but it's a start.

Got a couple more hours of painting done this week and finished one more miniature for my group. Now that my hobby area at the new house exists and is properly lit, I can do at least a little bit at a time again.

Finally an actual new progress photo: In the front is the "Two Minis" Beast Tyrant character, which allows you to play - you guessed it - two minis. The bear and its handler. My friend just unlocked this character and decided to play it starting tomorrow, so I'm trying to get them at least 90% done. In back are the Sunkeeper (my current character) and the Quartermaster, which is the same race as the Sunkeeper, so I tried to somewhat match his colors to hers. Just gotta finish the cobblestone pattern on his base.

Thanks! Only four more of this set to complete. Then 11 more for another guy, along with finishing his TMNT and Rising Sun minis! Then an Imperial Knight, and the pastel dog portrait that's a year overdue!

I have to geek out for a minute after today's Warhammer 40k previews! So for the 40K Orks, their big boss is a massive ork named "Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka". He's permanently fused into a giant mech suit with a claw and a gun arm. And THIS...has been his mini for probably the last 20 years: So he's pretty cool, but the mini has aged to the point where it kinda resembles an old Wolfenstein 3D boss, where the sprite height limit meant they had to make bosses WIDER instead of TALLER. But then, today they revealed the new, updated version, and HOLY FORKING SHIRTBALLS, THIS GUY IS HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE!!! And here he is in comparison to other orks, and the most recent "Primaris" Space Marines! Since I've mostly given up on actually PLAYING 40K and just want to collect, paint and/or sell miniatures, I really want to get my hands on this guy! He's probably going to be in the $60 to $80 range upon release.
