Again from the non-book thread they are rightly worried about Ygritte. But no talk of Tywin. They must figure he is untouchable. Oh man this will be almost as good as the RW. People will lose their shit*. *probably not gold I seriously can't wait for this. I'm going to be torn between watching the screen and the look on Iffy's face.

I'm a little worried, though, that they're not gonna have him die while taking an actual shit, and Littlefinger's comment about people dying "on their chamberpots" was just a winking nod from the writers.

I really need Todd's review to go up. I want to bitch and complain about this episode. But, everyone I know including everyone at all the other sites I post on are newbies.
Seriously, how many characters is the show going to kill who are alive in the books?! And they can't just give us one of the reverse? What I mean is: Can we have Oberyn back, please?
Really surprised they let the Night's Watch characters carry this episode. Thought for sure we'd see Stannis & co show up.

For an episode that was supposed to be ALL FIGHTING ALL EXCITEMENT SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY that was incredibly dull. I thought there were some good moments. Such as the tracking shot before the release of Ghost. The giants and mammoth were pretty good for a TV budget. Overall it did seem to lack sense of epic and importance though.

I spent most of the episode watching the clock, wondering when they were going to switch stories - 9:20 huh 9:30 hmmm 9:40 oh no 9:50 god damn it - well, at least we'll get some Stannis 9:57 nooooooope
Sorry, but I can't stand show Jon Snow - all of the Wall/wildling stuff seems so dull

I thought this episode was very well done, but all its failings are the failings of the show's handling of Jon's story. It seems like starting last season, they decided to try for another Blackwater with this battle, but couldn't really get the groundwork right. Instead of one or two episodes north of the wall, they should've spent all of last season developing Jon and the Wildlings, climaxing with them climbing the wall. Then this season could've just followed the book, having Jon leave the wildlings one episode, fight off the attack from the south which kills Ygritte the next, fight off Mance's army and have Stannis save the day at the end of the season. That way we would've had more of an emotional stake in what happened. Instead, as others speculated, it sorta seems like the showrunners didn't like the Jon story or didn't think Kit Harrington could carry it, so they glossed over most of it and tried to make it compelling with a single battle.

They killed Pyp and Grenn. DUDE WHAT THE FUCK? They are pretty superfluous characters on the TV show and not really ones we need. But yeah this was just, well, there. Where the hell is Mance Ryder? We haven't seen him all season and this is the big Wildling battle we should have least seen him in the Wildling scenes.

Seriously, the whole point of Stannis showing up and saving the day is so that Jon feels obligated to assist Stannis in return, which is why he fucks himself backing the underdog against the Bolton's far superior numbers. Also, it means that the wildling army just looks incompetent, if they can't take 100 people from both sides at once. Yes, it makes the Night's Watch look better in comparison, but with absolutely no preparation, they really aren't supposed to. And let's not mentioned they killed off practically all of the named characters at the wall now, so it'll probably have to be someone like Dolorous Edd who leads the revolt. I really like the wall stuff in DwD, but with this track record, I'm just going to be more and more depressed by what happens in s5.

Yeah, I really figured was going to be:
Episode 9: Stannis rides in and saves the day. Episode 10: Sam rigs the election, Tyrion's escape, Lady Stoneheart reveal
I don't know how they'll cram all of that into one episode, especially considering they still need to wrap up Arya and the Hound, and check in on Dany. I'm guessing now that they push the elections to next season, as they can dole it out slowly over a few episodes.

I really like the wall stuff in DwD, but with this track record, I'm just going to be more and more depressed by what happens in s5. I don't think last night's episode made the Night's Watch look all that badass. The book version they are able to hold Castle Black with heavy loses and a lot of damage to the actual fortress, but they repel the invaders which is basically what happened in the episode last night. The wildling army is still wildin' out, beyond the wall and a bunch of those dudes are hurt, dead, or dying. So I haven't given up hope for the Stannis stuff, because his appearance plays out pretty similarly in the book. Book version has Jon being sent out by Slynt to talk with Mance after the Night's Watch repels the Wildling army and while he's doing so Stannis' army pops up out of nowhere and routs the Wildlings. The only thing that was really different was that Book version of Jon Snow was a dude with a bum leg who was shooting Wildlings with a bow from atop a tower who gets sent out to talk with Mance because the people in charge hate Jon Snuhh and want him dead, while the TV version was some kind of 1980s USA Up All Night movie action hero who doesn't listen to no goddamn Chief of Police and does what he needs to do to get results. Which I guess makes sense because it seems like Jon Snuhh got back from being a fake wildling a lot sooner in the show than in the book. Like in the book I think he arrived and like a few days later they were under attack. Man of Action Jon Snuhh also makes some sense if and when the elections happened. Pretty much all the guys he was friendly with (save for Sam) got killed off last night, so Jon Snuhh being an action hero provides a concrete reason for random nameless Night Watch extras to vote for Jon Snuhh without Grenn and Pyp campaigning for him.

I really like the wall stuff in DwD, but with this track record, I'm just going to be more and more depressed by what happens in s5. My newbie friends first reaction was "It seemed a bit anti-climactic" and "Didn't it end in the same place it started?" And all I can think to say is, "Well, the show, for some reason, bumped the climax to the next episode." Of course, they also don't even know why the Wildlings are attacking the Wall. And these are fairly smart people. I got, "Are they fleeing because of the White Walkers, or is this just some kind of revenge thing? If they're just fleeing, why are they going around killing everyone?" The show has just done a terrible job with this story. They should have found a way to have Mance in more episodes. I'm not even sure I have much hope that this will get better once Stannis gets there. Because the writers have already shown us that they don't even understand Stannis. Now we'll be combining a character they don't care about with a character they don't understand. Wooo! Exciting!

I am really worried Tyrion will not have the proper amount of time to fully flesh out his motivation. Since his first wife has been so neglected in the show, it will take a long conversation with Jaime just to drive home to the non-book readers who she was again and why he is upset enough to kill his father and go on a quest. I think the election will be next season. I imagine a bunch of reveals as we check in with everyone. Arya leaves the sick Hound. The wall is saved by Stannis. Jaime and Tyrion. Dany is morose? Tyrion and Tywin. Lady Stoneheart. The only reason I leave Stoneheart in there is because of the Lena Headey's instagram and it would be a great cliffhanger to end the season on.

I dunno, I think for the show's purposes, there's enough motivation as-is for Tyrion to kill Shae and Tywin.

I dunno, I think for the show's purposes, there's enough motivation as-is for Tyrion to kill Shae and Tywin. True, but is there enough motivation for him to go searching for "where whores go" or will they downplay that and just have him wander a bit before heading Dany's way?

True, but is there enough motivation for him to go searching for "where whores go" or will they downplay that and just have him wander a bit before heading Dany's way? Eh, I never got the impression that he was legitimately searching for Tysha. It was just a mantra he bitterly recited to remind himself of his hate for his father while allying himself with those who will further tear down his legacy. Though it would be nice if they could organically fit that all in there, cuz it will be sorely missed otherwise.

It was definitely badass. I just wanted some emotion and plot advancement to go with the badassery. The lack of plot advancement is mind-boggling to me. The episode ends with the Wildlings about to attack and the Night's Watch is fucked. Wow. Why spend that much money and devote an entire episode to a story which goes nowhere? There are only 10 episodes, D&D! Come on!
I am now very irritated that we spent so much time on that diversion to Craster's Keep. Couldn't they have structured this a bit better?
It makes me a bit nervous for the finale. How much of the Wall story are we going to see in that episode? Are they actually going to be able to finish out the book 3 story on the Wall? With Tyrion, Tywin, Arya, The Hound, Bran, Dany...Lady Stoneheart?

Honestly though I'd completely forgotten about these characters, so I felt a bit of a disconnect with a lot of book readers upset about these deaths. Granted I wasn't bothered by Irri and Jhiqui either so YMMV.

At this point it is down to Sam, Ed, Aemon and MAYBE Thorne. Perhaps they will let Ghost and Gilly vote. Otherwise the only purpose those characters seemed to serve was to give us recognizable faces to mourn as the show hits its weekly death quota. Once Sam leaves and Thorne and Aemon probably die, who will be left at the wall? I guess the writers figured they could do away with those guys if they would be replaced by Stannis and his posse.

nowimnothing All Jon needs in narrative terms is a single non-Sam character who can be his confidante. Edd could arguably do that. He could get the voting support of background Watchmen after the big heroic wall battle thing.

So a ton of stuff is gonna happen in the finale but honestly I am most interested to see how they handle Leaf, the member if the children of the forest that Bran meets... presuming she shows up. A little gnomic being might cross a line and seem too ridiculous for some viewers.
