Well, the Tuscon residents on my Twitter feed were indeed talking about St Mary's as the game approached. A lot of talk about the screwed up seeding, saying St Mary's should have been a higher seed and it wasn't fair to have to play them in the 2nd round.
Which is probably true. But, Wisconsin was bizarrely given an 8 seed and Villanova had to deal with that. And Wichita State's seed is ridiculous.
Finally, I remember reading an article about "tips for filling in your bracket". One of the things the author recommended was to bet heavily on the ACC teams because that was the best conference. I thought this was ridiculous reasoning and promptly picked Notre Dame and Virginia to exit in this round. (Had the first round ACC losses picked, too!) Didn't anticipate Florida St getting bounced, but it does make me laugh that 6 ACC teams got bounced in the first two rounds. (Speaking of questionable seeding, not sure Virginia should have been a 5.)

Btw currently inside the greenville arena for the unc-arkansas and gamecocks-duke Well, who else is now very excited to get this eye witness game report? Hopefully Hawkguy is still alive. And my "Darkest Timeline" bracket goes down. Wondering if Duke losing is some sort of good omen that 2017 is starting to turn around?

it was intense. so damn loud with our large crowded aided by leftover unc fans cheering us on as well. It was such an ugly, physical game in the first half that I'm still amazed we put up 65(!) in the 2nd yet maintained our defensive stranglehold. We couldn't really stop their 3s cause...damn theyre good at 3s, but it didnt seem to matter. Probably the most satisfying part was a super obnoxious duke fan in front of us who left with like 1:30 still on the clock. Owl...do we have a shot against Baylor?

Honestly, I kind of thought Baylor would get upset early because they sort of faded down the stretch and it seemed like they'd peaked in January. Motley is a handful down low though and they always seem to just have a bunch of long, athletic guys that are a pain to score against.

I guess we can technically talk about that Mississippi State- UConn game here, which was obviously amazing. I found it interesting that South Carolina fans were rooting for Mississippi- on the one hand yes you have a better chance of beating StateMiss and getting a championship- but I'm not sure if it would really feel like a championship under these circumstances. Nobody would leave the tournament saying South Carolina had such an amazing tournament and they're a great team- they'll still be talking about how amazing an upset StateMiss pulled off and how it disappointing it was they didn't go all the way after that game. I think you'd rather have a chance at the glory of toppling the ultimate Goliath than a Championship that would be a footnote to the big story of the tournament.

I am so bummed I missed that UConn upset. Stupid rehearsals. When I opened up ESPN and saw the headline I was stunned. I immediately went and watched some highlights. Wow, what an ending!
When I was on a competitive team I always wanted to win the championship by beating the best team. Definitely, if that team got knocked out of the playoffs earlier, it would be a bit deflating. But, I know some of my teammates didn't care about that at all. They would be really happy about it being easier to win with the top competition bounced out.
Anyway, it is very cool that Women's college BB will have a champion other than UConn.
Additionally, the Final Four in Men's BB is here this weekend. I have to perform downtown this weekend. Downtown is filled with Final Four events. AAAAAAAAAh! So many people! TOURISTS EVERYWHERE!!! OMG, Symphony, why the F*** did you schedule a concert the weekend of the Final Four and baseball's Opening Day???
Today, we had a 4 hour break between rehearsal and the concert and I couldn't even go home. There'd be nowhere downtown to park when I got back! And the traffic was so bad, I probably couldn't even get out of downtown and back in less than 2 hours anyway.
I finally found a semi-quiet place to eat lunch. For about 20 minutes. Didn't realize that UNC was staying in the hotel across the street. Suddenly their damn pep band starts blasting their fight song, a bunch of cheerleaders run out and tourists swamped the area to watch the players load onto the bus. They played that stupid fight song for about 20 minutes, I swear. Ugh.
At least tomorrow it will be more swamped with baseball fans. Those are my people. Not these out of state tourists. Grrr....

This is just how tournaments work sometimes.

This is the first time since Maryland in 2002 I correctly predicted the champion via my bracket. Of course, North Carolina was the only one of my Final Four teams to actually make it to the Final Four, but beggers can't be choosers.

Thornwell was the big loss but also PJ Dozier hurts as well. I think we've got enough people behind them though not to be too much of a step back. No way we make it to the final 4 again but granted i still cant believe that happened anyway

There are a couple OK pieces leftover from last year's team, but there are a ton of (mostly highly touted) freshman and 5th year grad transfers that are going to see big minutes.

So I suppose one of the biggest questions entering this season is what exactly Mizzou will do with the once-in-a-lifetime recruiting class they've put together. Combined with a coaching change that the entire fan base seems happy with, some seem ready to automatically anoint them the class of the SEC and national contenders.
I'm skeptical, and not just because it would warm my cold, black heart as a KU fan to see the most Mizzou thing ever happen by havig their finest group of players ever go out in flames. But this is still a team coming off an stupendously awful season (losses to North Carolina Central! Eastern Illinois! LIPSCOMB!) that could easily collapse under unrealistic expectations. I think they'll be far far more competitive than they've been since the conference change, but I'm not ready to pencil them into Final Four.

But Mizzou fans as of late aren't used to even the 'recruiting well' part of the equation, so methinks they're jumping the gun a weee bit (though to be fair this is certainly a more talented group than Martin ever put together at Cal).

As a Mizzou fan who firmly believes that all KU fans have cold, black hearts (that's what you get for worshiping a fake bird), I think any talk of SEC titles or Final Fours to be way premature. I am confident in Coach Martin, and am thrilled with the recruiting class. But as you point out, last season was beyond horrid, and what's more, it was the third beyond horrid season in a row. Expectations are weird, though, and can shift radically depending on the circumstances. But yeah, let's see if we can surpass our entire SEC win total from the Kim Anderson era this year, and then we can start talking about dancing.

As with all Big 12 defectors (possible exemption for Colorado), Mizzou deserves a slow descent into irrelevance. I hope this turns into a "Ben Simmons at LSU" level disaster and disappointment.

The non-con slate is not super strong this year, which makes sense given that they've finally hit a bit of a rebuild season. @mizzou is objectively the best non-con game we have and could be fun for Big 12 reunion reasons, but I just don't see us winning so I'm not that excited. The Iowa game is in Ames this year, so that will probably be the most fun. I'm also rooting for a potential TIF showdown with Hawkguy if ISU and S. Carolina both make the PR Tip-Off finals.

So who's sweating (even if irrationally) or already been dinged by potential FBI fallout for your program? Nothing at all to implicate Kansas, but you can't help feel nobody things are just beginning. . .
