So who's sweating (even if irrationally) or already been dinged by potential FBI fallout for your program? Nothing at all to implicate Kansas, but you can't help feel nobody things are just beginning. . . Yea, I'd like to think that Iowa State is clean (-ish), but who even knows? Honestly, unless your a big fan of a mid-major or something, I gotta think there's at least a chance someone on the staff is brushing up against these people, right?

Yeah, I think there's a very real possibility this affects numerous major programs. Fans of every single major conference team should be a bit nervous right now.

So, I work at a Pac-12 school. Not the one in my state which definitely did get hit by the FBI arrests and scandal. That, btw, is HUGE news in this state. Coming from THAT program?? HUGE news.
Anyway, *my* school is clearly freaking out about this. This week, all staff got not one, but TWO messages from the Administration and Athletics department reminding everyone about compliance when dealing with student athletes.
DON'T OFFER THEM MONEY! DON'T OFFER THEM GIFTS! DON'T OFFER THEM SERVICES!
Basically, DON'T SPEAK TO THEM OR THEIR FAMILIES OR THEIR DOGS UNLESS YOU HAVE PERMISSION FROM THE COMPLIANCE OFFICE!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
That was the gist of it.

It's too bad that Iowa State isn't playing college basketball this year.

Man, for a battle of Blue Bloods between the two winningest college basketball programs in the country, this KU-UK game is terrrrible. Sloppy and scattered - both teams look VERY young and uncertain.

So, Conference play begins. How's the season looking for everyone?
Folks here are losing their minds because ASU shockingly has a good team. No one saw that coming. Tomorrow brings the rivalry game ASU at Arizona. This game suddenly got a ton more interesting. All the students are gone for the holidays, but the game is beyond sold out. Tickets are now being scalped at insane prices.
Even though ASU is ranked #3 and Arizona is #17, the game is at Arizona, and ASU is still considered the underdog. Arizona looks really good since they flubbed that Bahamas tournament. Sean Miller isn't sitting any players implicated in that FBI investigation.
ASU's record isn't a mirage, they've beat some quality teams. But, I'm still assuming Arizona is going to win this game. Arizona is the best team in the Pac-12 until conference game results say otherwise.
Luckily, the Pac-12 looks to be a mess this year. UCLA is down players and is underperforming. Oregon is a mystery. USC is also underperforming. So ASU and Arizona should finish 1-2 either way. This should give ASU a decent tournament seed. Hopefully! It would be super fun to have both state schools in the tournament.

I was actually more confident about Mizzou's chances before last week's Braggin' Rights game against Illinois. Then again, qualifying for any tournament is a great improvement over the last three years, so I should be happy if we make the NIT.

Then again, qualifying for any tournament is a great improvement over the last three years, so I should be happy if we make the NIT. Yeah, Arizona is usually the team with the tournament expectations. It is quite strange for ASU to be having a good season. They made the NCAA tournament last in 2014, and before that it was back to 2009 when they made it. So, NCAA tournament bids don't come around often for ASU. This is currently the highest ranked ASU has ever been. This game against Arizona is consuming all local sports talk, even with several bowl games here, including the Fiesta Bowl today. I'm predicting a double digit win by Arizona. I just don't think ASU can keep up with that team. Game's in about an hour. Basically no one here can watch it on tv because it's on the Pac-12 network, which DirecTV doesn't carry and most cable customers don't have. If anyone had known it'd be the #3 vs #17 teams playing, a bigger network would have had it. Alas.

Looks like I underestimated ASU. I said they'd lose by double digits. They lost by 6. They were considered underdogs by 6.5, so the game went pretty much exactly as Vegas thought it would. These two teams look really good. Hoping one of them can make a deep tournament run. And now there are no remaining undefeated teams in College Basketball. Wooo!

Have been happy to see Arizona State turn out to have a very impressive looking team, because it makes me slightly less apoplectic about Kansas's loss to them at Allen Fieldhouse.

That was definitely shocking. I don't know, though... Kansas still doesn't look great. Big 12 looks surprisingly tough this year. Definitely not looked great. When we're on, we're on, but when you attempt as many 3-pointers as we have been, obviously the fear is that at some point in an important match-up we'll suddenly go cold. That said, the emphasis on the outside shooting game has largely been a product of necessity, with our offense dominated by our guards along with an occasional dump inside to Azubuike - we have nobody (apart from at times Vick) like Frank Mason who can go inside and create their own shot or get to the line. If, as we hope, we get Sousa and even more hopefully Billy Preson in the lineup this year, that would change both our style of play and our general outlook substantially.

Bit of a homer fan vent:
I like the Big 12 round-robin scheduling.
I understand that our two losses to start conference are more the result of having a young, rebuilding team this year than anything else.
That being said, it is some bullshit that two of our home Big 12 games got burned up this year while students were still on break. I understand that they have to start the conference season in December to accommodate 18 games (although moving the Big 12/SEC challenge back into the traditional non-con months would help a little), but the conference should be trying harder to schedule things such that only one home game lands during holiday break.

This is my favorite time of year - when all the other B12 teams beat up on each other, and somehow KU wins just enough games to come out on top of the conference.

Everyone here was briefly entertained when ASU was good for a while. Now we're back to eyeing Sean Miller and UofA and wondering if this season's record and stats will survive the FBI probe.

Come on NCAA! The beakers are a #1 seed! Mizzou is an #8 seed! We could have ruined their season in the second round! Instead, assuming we beat Florida State (a big if, given that we have no idea if Michael Porter is actually ready to come back, and we lost our first game in the SEC tourney to a team that promptly fired its coach), we'll have to take on Xavier.
(After the last three seasons, and Porter's injury, I'm actually amazed we're dancing at all, and as an 8th seed no less).

Whelp, I've watched about zero basketball this year, but I went ahead and filled one out. Virginia seems like a boring obvious pick, but that's what I'm going with.

Good on ya, Loyola-Chicago.
Normally I love to pick close upsets in the first round, but I went with #8 Va Tech over #9 Alabama out of spite. Oh well.

Arizona is underrated because of the shittiness of the Pac-12, I thought. Virginia is probably overrated as the overall #1 seed, I thought. If they can take out Virginia, their path to the Final Four is clear, I thought.
Congrats, Wildcats. You join 2012 Mizzou (sob), 2013 Georgetown, and 2015 Iowa State in the MarkInTexas's Final Four Picks That Lost In the First Round Club.

Gotta say, this is a big relative help to my brackets because I only had UVA winning two rounds.
