OK, be patient with grampy here. So you can only create a Kinja account with a Google, Facebook, or Twitter account, none of which I have (or would want traced to activity on the AVClub). So I have to create a burner account, which means I won't ever be able to merge my old AVClub account with my Kinja one? Whatever happened to just providing an email? I think the "merger" is horseshit. What I'd recommend is create a burner, and then email either a writer you have a friendly relationship or, if you'd rather, Ernie, and ask them to ungray you, explaining the problem. Yeah the merger stuff sounds suspiciously like the "You'll get front-page notifications back soon!" promise during the last clusterfuck site redesign.

It's so weird to think that a company that originated as a Spanish-language cable channel (U-NEEEEEE-VIS-YONNNNN!) now owns all of these websites.

I decided to drown my sorrows by looking at old captures of the site at the Internet Archive, and discovered that I could actually log in. Then, my hopes were crushed when I discovered it was logging me into my Disqus account, and not my legacy account. Goodbye plans to comment on a three-year-old Newswire about Bates Motel getting renewed.

The problem is that I still can't see who liked other people's comments. It feels a lot less community when I can't hear who is laughing at other people's jokes. No, that, you can't do. It's one of the many, many big problems with trying to maintain a community with Kinja. But not having a community is one of the major aspects about Kinja, it's supposed to reduce the friction of readers having opinions and stuff by making sure they feel no compulsion to comment. Ask Ernie and that other nobody who basically told us that Kinja was never meant to foster community, just serve the writers with the barest semblance of community. I will be pushing for Kinja to be referred to by us as Kunja because it sounds dirty like Santorum and I wish to denigrate them. It's all bullshit and tears out AVC's heart by removing the reader's ability to share thoughts. It truly is the Old Country now, nobody goes there anymore.

I guess I'll just lurk here for 3 years until I get the guts to comment more. It's not worth it.

Incidentally, having just made a 30 Rock reference above, I'm going to state that I will always love the AV Club that was, because without it I'd never have watched 30 Rock, Arrested Development, Community or Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. (I'm still only 10 eps into Kimmy Schmidt). Or probably ever rewatched early Simpsons.

The new site is just so unpleasant to look at. I don't know why they have all that white space on the left of the screen. (Maybe for ads - I have adblocker.) I'm really unhappy about this, and just happy I still have this place.

I'm really unhappy about this, and just happy I still have this place. I just unblocked the main page to check. I had ONE AD repeated in the middle center, and on the left every page scroll or so, that stayed centered for a few lines before scrolling up and reappearing at the bottom again. SO WEIRD and UGLY.

And thank god we did.

I looked at the front page on my phone just now. Yep, one big scrolling mess of content in no order. I went down a few articles and clicked on one...and it was "shared from i09". Why does Univision even have more than one website now? They should all just redirect to the same gaping maw of an address. This isn't brick and mortar, there are no competing stores to close after the merger.
I was at least going to read some of the good writers and columns, like Will Harris and A History of Violence. Now I just wish the site vanished from existence instead of lingering. I hope the writers still get paid.

Just didn't want to talk about it because, y'know, straight after condolences for Floyd's dog isn't really the time or place for me to caper about making crap jokes. Anyway, I can help you out with one of them. Proust's "In Search of Lost Time" and "Remembrance of Things Past" are the same novel ("À la recherche du temps perdu"), just different translations of it. So you can cross one off the list. Unless you fancy reading both versions of course, but they're each 4000+ pages long, so you'll probably want to get cracking. Also, on a similar theme, I was delighted to see Powell's "A Dance to the Music of Time" cycle on there. I'm currently halfway through the 11th of 12 volumes on that one, and basically loving it.

Will's new Battle of the Network stars piece that I was really looking forward to was completely gone from the front page by the time I got home from work last night I can't imagine they're going to pay him/anyone for anything even remotely longform much longer if the visibility of it is measured in minutes. Why can't one of us win a major lottery and start an AVclub classic style site

This is interesting........ I don't want to get anybody's hopes up, but maybe somebody smarter than me should have a look at this and see what's going on.. The direct Discus link to yesterday's Reasonable Discussions still has all the comments, and it looks like people are still posting there, as of a couple of hours ago. Yay Discus?

There is a drop-down menu, they just hide it. On the main AVC page, click on TV Reviews and that will take you to a page where there's a drop-down menu on the upper middle of the page.

There actually is, it's just not under TV Club, because Kinja. If you click TV Reviews at the top of the home page, the "All Categories" dropdown lists shows and takes you to their spaces.

You know it's a great site design when a group of their most hard core readers needs a help thread to find stuff.

I'm just bummed we'll never know the true identity of Elegant Victorian Lady. *faints dead away*Agreed, and also, the Taco Bell Bell. Always made me laugh. Binky! [Monocle falls out of eye, into brandy snifter.]

I was only describing the Taco Bell Bell to a friend yesterday and she cracked up right in front of me. It's probably one of my favorite-ever gimmicks aside from Cookie Monster.

All this time I'd assumed that at least 90% of their readers was from the slacker-at-work crowd. Who knew that so many people were spending their actual personal free time visiting the AV Club? I was in the habit of flipping my laptop open after dinner to scroll through the comment threads for a couple of hours. I'm sort of isolated where I am right now, so it was sort of a way of engaging in actual intelligent conversation. And kept me from having to deal with the steakheads at my local bar. Good to see you, 2 F's. Make sure to join the group, AV Clubbers. I go to this site religiously every AM. I was in a little hotel lobby in the Latin Quarter of Paris the day We're Number 1 - Pink Floyd The Wall was published, and I had to, HAD TO, post a comment, because AV Club. (But yeah, I'm at work now, which reminds me...)
