Star Trek: The Next Generation - S02E20 - The Emissary
We're coming down the home stretch on Season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation here at the Star Trek Fuck Report and today we check in with the antepenultimate episode, "The Emissary," which first aired on June 29, 1989. The title and the brief episode summary on Netflix lead me to believe it's about a emissary but beyond that who knows.
Preexisting Prejudices
Before beginning this entire deal I think I knew like maybe five Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes by name though there are many, many more that I could identify by a brief plot summary which is generally how I know which episode I'm about to watch. This go-round the plot summary is so vague that for a minute I thought I was somehow rewatching the episode where a horny Troi's mom boards the Enterprise since it was just like, "An emissary boards the Enterprise and some shit happens." That's like the plot of probably 65% of all Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes. All of this is a very long winded way of saying, I don't know what episode this is and therefore don't have any preexisting prejudices.
Plot Synopsis
The episode begins with Worf, Data, Geordi, Doctor Grandma, and Riker With Beard playing poker. I really dislike when they play cards or gamble or bet on stuff since there's no money in The Next Generation so the idea of gambling seems kind of stupid. Anyway Worf wins a lot and shows no emotion. He's apparently now nicknamed "The Ice Man" which no one has ever called him prior to this episode and certainly won't ever refer to him again as after it.
Their game is interrupted by a random crewman calling Riker With Beard on the spacephone and summoning him back to the bridge. The crewman informs Riker With Beard that they've received, "a class eleven emergency signal from Starfleet Command."
The game ends and everyone returns to the bridge where Picard has no additional information beyond the coordinates they've been ordered to head towards. Riker With Beard wishes they Starfleet had given them a hint as to what is going on to which Picard replies, "Whenever Starfleet gets enigmatic, I know we're about to face a challenge."
After that good, good opening theme song we check back in on the bridge where the Enterprise has nearly arrived at their new coordinates. They get hailed by an old lady from Starfleet Command. She is named Gromek or some shit and informs Picard that they are going to be joined by a special Federation emissary from a random-ass spacebase.
Gromek gives no other details about the mission other than that the rendezvous will be tricky so it's imperative that they reach the intercept point on schedule. Beyond that, the emissary will fill them in on the rest of the details once they're aboard the Enterprise.
After Gromek hangs up the spacephone, Picard asks Data about the emissary's ship. Data tells him that it's not a shuttle, but rather a probe. Riker With Beard is poleaxed by this. "A class eight probe is just over two meters long!" he hollers.
Picard explains that if the transmitters had been removed they could install a life support system and still have enough room for a single individual and since the probe could travel at warp nine Data adds that by sending the emissary to them that way it would save them six point one hour.
Moments later a random-ass probe thing approaches from behind the Enterprise. They lock on the tractor beam and then beam the probe onto the Enterprise. Riker With Beard the goes down to the teleportation chamber to greet their guest.
They open up the probe and there's a humanoid with a mask in there. Doctor Grandma does a scan but says her readings are weird. The person in the probe removes the mask and is revealed to be a Klingon woman who introduces herself in space English as Kyler.
Riker With Beard does the move of using the one sentence he knows in a foreign language to someone assumed to be a foreigner in order to try and get in their pants and growls some junk in Klingon at her. She replies in space English, "Oh you speak Klingon," and Riker With Beard confesses that he only speaks a little and then introduces himself and Doctor Grandma.
Doctor Grandma's like, "I randomly scanned you and your vital signs are kind of fucked up for a Klingon," and Kyler tells her that she's only half-Klingon having a Klingon father and a human mother.
A short while later in the conference room Riker With Beard introduces Kyler to Picard who in turn introduces Troi and Data. He starts to introduce Worf but is interrupted by Kyler who makes it clear that she and Worf have some history with one another before we head to break. Worf seems less than pleased to see her.
Back from break Kyler explains that some kind of Klingon spaceship that was launched 75 years earlier during the Klingon War on a top secret mission transported its crew in suspended animation and are slated to awaken soon but due to the fact that they do not know the war is over and the Klingons and Starfleet are now allied will undoubted attack any Federation ship or outpost they come across after coming out of suspended animation,
Riker With Beard asks her if a Klingon ship wouldn't be better. She tells him that there's a Klingon vessel en route but it's two days behind the Enterprise and might not reach the old timey Klingon ship in time. Troi asks Kyler if she thinks she can talk the Klingons down but she says that it's impossible, they must be destroyed.
Picard tells her no and then tells Worf to work with her to find an alternative solution to the problem. Everyone save for Worf and Picard then leave. Worf asks if Captain Picard could assign Data or Riker With Beard to work with Kyler instead. Picard asks if there are personal reasons why Worf doesn't want to work with her and he admits that there are but when Picard asks him if there are any professional reasons that he does not want the assignment Worf says that there aren't and then withdraws his request and leaves.
Meanwhile in the hallway Troi and Kyler bond over the fact that humans apparently love fucking aliens and having half-caste kids all over the place. Troi seems pretty well adjusted about the entire thing, talking about how she tried to experience the richness and diversity of the two cultures while Kyler talks about feeling trapped between them and not really fitting into either.
When they enter her quarters, Kyler tells Troi that she thinks she got the worst aspects of each race with a human sense of humor inherited from her mother that constantly got her into trouble and a terrible temper that she got from her Klingon father. She tells Troi that she tries to keep it under tight control since it terrifies even her sometimes.
Kyler changes into a red leather catsuit and heads to some kind of study room where Worf is working on a computer. I'm a bit confused about where her clothes came from. She clearly had no luggage with her when she arrived on the Enterprise but over the course of the Episode changes her clothes I think four times. Is there a machine like the food-a-majig machine that just spits random clothing out of it? If there is why was Dr. Beverly Crusher buying cloth to make clothing out of in the very first episode? Is sewing like her "reading actual bound paper books" or "playing baseball" or "gambling" old timey hobby that she would have no actual reason to do? Things to think about for someone other than the researchers conducting this very scientific study in the field of Star Trek Fuckology.
She apologizes to Worf for being late and says that she had to make herself beautiful. Worf is all business with her though she wants him to lighten up, saying that he was not this aloof six years earlier. She tells Worf that the two of them have unfinished business but Worf thinks otherwise and just wants to get down to business.
He looks up the Klingon vessel in the ship's library and is able to learn the captain's name but not the ship's mission. Kyler tells him that it was probably a military secret and that all this research is pointless since violence is the only solution when dealing with an old timey Klingon. They get into an argument and Worf tells her that since coming to the Enterprise he's learned, "that most problems have more than one solution."
She tells Worf that he's as stubborn as ever and then leaves saying that after careful consideration her original recommendation of just blowing the Klingon ship up still stands.
Back in her quarters, a furious Kyler karate chops a glass table in half. Troi then randomly shows up and states the obvious. "You're upset," she says. A sarcastic Kyler asks her if it was her Betazoid X-Men powers that told her that.
"Well that...and the table," replies Troi.
Troi tells her that sometimes when she's feeling stressed out the exercise programs on the Holodeck help her to blow off steam. Kyler takes her up on her offer and after changing her clothes again (this time into a purple striped catsuit) heads down to the Holodeck to work out. She has Computer show her all the exercise programs and selects Lieutenant Worf's calisthenics program and enters the Holodeck, where she puts on a Power Glove.
Meanwhile on the bridge, Worf is also tense as fuck and wants to randomly check the weapons systems even though they were checked a short while earlier. Picard orders him to relax and Worf, after a brief attempt at trying to convince Picard that he was relaxed, leaves the bridge. Once he's gone, Picard says that he's never seen Worf so unsettled before.
"The Ice Man's finally melting!" smirks Riker With Beard.
Worf goes down to the Holodeck where he finds his workout program running. He enters and watches as Kyler fights a skeleton monster and some other furry monster deal. As an aside I am glad that out of everything they decided to have continuity about, I'm glad they decided to keep the same shitty looking monsters in Worf's workout routine that they showed us in that episode from Season 1 where he and Riker Without Beard fought foes together.
Worf watches Kyler dispatch the foes and then approaches her. She tells him that his program kind of sucks as Worf picks up some swords. Worf tells Computer, "LEVEL TWO!" and hands one of the swords to Kyler. The dispatched foes pop back up and Worf and Kyler fight, wrecking shop on all of them.
Once they have dispatched their foes, the two of them are horny as fuck and gaze into each others' eyes and then hold hands. They squeeze each others' hands until drawing blood and we go to commercial.
When we return from break Kyler jokes, "Some calisthenics programs are better than others." AW YE YE! We're back on the board with my mang Worf taking a trip to the Bone Zone with Kyler.
Kyler asks why they didn't fuck six years earlier and Worf tells her that they were too young and too unaware, lacking commitment. Kyler adds that they might have lacked courage too. Worf tells her, "No longer!" and starts to bellow random Klingon stuff but is cut off by Kyler.
Worf tells her that since they are mated they "must solemnize [their] union with The Oath." Kyler is furious and tells him that she will not become his wife. Worf tells her that she already is which pisses Kyler off. She tells him not to give her "that Klingon nonsense," which pisses Worf off more. She tells him that he was a good fuck but it didn't mean anything.
"Then this night had no meaning. And that, I will not believe." says Worf.
"Believe what you will," replies Kyler before storming off.
Meanwhile on the bridge, the Enterprise nears the intercept point for the Klingon ship and slows to FULL IMPULSE POWER and begins scanning for the ship. Riker With Beard hopes that they locate the ship before the crew wakes up and Picard agrees since, "There's not an outpost in this area that could defend itself against a Klingon warship."
Back in study hall, Kyler is doing research, trying to come up with another solution to the old timey Klingon problem. Worf shows up with Data which Kyler takes as Worf feeling like he needs a chaperone. Data doesn't understand how him being there would constitute chaperoning. She tells him to pay it no mind and then asks Worf is he would have gone through with the Oath.
Worf tells her that, "Honor demanded no less."
She asks him if honor is all that he cares about and if he feels anything else. She then asks Data whose behavior is more perplexing: humans or Klingons. Data tells her that at the moment it would be hard for him to choose. She admits that she would as well and then starts to tell them about two possibilities for when they encounter the Klingon ship before we smash cut to the conference room.
She tells the assembled crew that if they arrive and the crew of the Klingon ship is still asleep they can beam a crew over to override the cryogenic controls and keep the Klingon crew asleep until the modern times Klingon ship that was two days away arrives and can deal with them. Kyler continues by saying that if they're already awake they need to be destroyed.
Troi suggests that they might have been a scientific ship which Kyler mocks, "Klingons of that era doing research for its own sake?"
Riker With Beard says that regardless of that they might be reasonable but Kyler again scoffs at this saying that they will only attack. Picard asks if they could possibly disable the ship rather than destroy it but both Worf and Kyler tell him that the captain would destroy the ship in that case since Klingons do not surrender.
While they are debating this, Data calls from the bridge and informs them that they've detected a ship. Everyone goes out to the bridge and after putting shields up a Klingon ship appears on the big space TV. It immediately fires on the Enterprise, proving Kyler correct and then cloaks itself.
"Well Captain, you've had your chance..." says Kyler as the ship vanishes.
Back from break, Geordi comes onto the bridge and tells Picard that because the old cloaking devices sucked ass he would be able to track them if he adjusted the Enterprise's sensors and away we go! They set an intercept course and head after the ship.
Kyler asks Picard to allow the Klingons the honor of dying in battle, but Worf says that he has another idea. We then get a Captain's Log informing us that Picard has decided to go with Worf's plan and we then cut to some time later to see that plan play out.
They cut the Klingon ship off and then open hailing frequencies and when they do the Klingon ship is completely poleaxed by what they see, for sitting in the Captain and Commander's chairs are Worf and Kyler dressed in full Klingon military attire.
Worf orders him to stop and drop his shields. The Klingon captain wants to know on whose authority. Worf tells him that he is "commanding the Enterprise" which I suppose at the moment he is and that the Klingon captain committed an act of treason by firing on the Enterprise.
The Captain tells him that he had a standing order to fire on all Federation ships and Worf calls him a fool asking him if it never occurred to him that the war could have ended while he was asleep. The Captain says he has no proof of that and Worf tells him to trust his eyes before calling him an idiot again.
The Captain wants to know how he can be certain it's not a Federation trick and Worf tells him that because the Captain is new to the Next Generation he has tried to be patient but his patience is running thin. He again orders the Klingon ship to lower its shields. The Klingon Captain asks what will happen if he refuses.
"Then die in ignorance. I can waste no more time on you. Phasers to full power," Worf orders.
The Klingon Captain tells him that they are on a crucial mission but since they've yet to lower their shields Worf orders all phasers to be fired. The Klingon Captain yells for him to wait and then has the shields lowered and yields command of the ship to Worf.
Worf tells him that he made the right decision and that Commander Kyler will board the ship and take command until the Klingon cruiser Prang arrives in a couple days to escort them back home. He then adds, "And Captain, welcome to the 24th century."
Once the communication channel is closed Picard and Riker With Beard walk back onto the bridge from Picard's office and Worf returns command of the ship to Picard, Picard commends his leadership skills and Riker With Beard asks him how he liked command.
"Comfortable chair," replies Worf in one of the few genuinely funny things to happen in this show up to this point.
Later in the teleportation chamber, Worf tells O'Brien that there's one to beam over to the Klingon ship. O'Brien sets up the teleporter and Worf relieves him of his duty. O'Brien leaves and Worf tells Kyler that the Prang will arrive in three days. Kyler explains that in the meantime she will being to assimilate the Klingons aboard the ship to the Next Generation.
Worf asks her if there's anything else she needs and she yells at him saying that he's have let her go without saying another word.
"What needs to be said?" asks Worf.
She tells him that she lied to him after they fucked. It did mean something to her and she was tempted to take the Oath with him but it scared her since she's never felt that way about anyone before. Worf tells her that he hasn't either. This pleases Kyler since it means that it was more than just a matter of honor for Worf.
She gets on the teleporter and tells him that "Maybe someday when our paths cross again, I won't be as easy to get rid of."
Worf tells her that he will not be complete without her and that's the episode...
How Rikered Was Riker With Beard?
Not very. He did the horny white guy thing of talking to a woman of color by randomly using the single sentence he knew in the language he assumed she spoke when in reality she spoke the same language as him at the level of a native speaker but that's got more to do with his horniness than his drunkenness. Dude seemed pretty sober and rational here so if he was hammered he hid it way better than he normally does.
Final Thoughts
I have to admit I was a bit surprised by the end of this episode. The way they harped on "maybe these Klingons are different," and "maybe we can reason with them," and how secret the Klingon ship's mission was, made me think that their secret mission was some sort of diplomatic shit about trying to join the Federation or something and the perceived threat was going to end up being a whole lot of nothing, but it wasn't...of course the Klingons were just as bad as Kyler said that they were and were only stopped via chicanery and gorilla dust rather than the reasoning that Picard was certain was possible, but who cares about any of that shit? People fucked in this episode!
Fuck Count
Though I know Worf ends up with a kid in later seasons (or possible in Deep Space 9) I assumed the entire thing happened off camera but I guess this fuck sesh is where Alexander or whatever his son's name is ends up coming from. I've got to admit that I'm a bit confused by how fucking happens with Klingons because from earlier dialogue it seems like Worf had fucked before but here it makes it seem like if you fuck as a Klingon you have to marry that person. So was he a virgin prior to this or not? We've also seen other horny-ass Klingons like that one lady Klingon who wanted to fuck Riker With Beard when he did a Commander exchange thing on a Klingon ship. Would she have married him if they fucked too? How does it work?
Worf: +1
Kyler: +1

Worf: +1
Kyler: +1
